Global Studio grew out of the work of the UN Millennium Project Task Force on Improving the Lives of Slum Dwellers (2002-2004) as a response to the critique that design and planning professionals are not well equipped to meet the challenges of improving the lives of the urban poor, which today number around one billion. Global Studio founding partners were members of the Task Force of which Elliott Sclar and Pietro Garau were co-chairs.
